In Dalmandi, more than 200 brothels were vacated. Alcohol and prostitution increased in the 1970s, leading to the arrest of 72 courtesans during a crackdown.

The widening project of Dalmandi Gali in Varanasi is progressing rapidly. Once a hub for courtesans, Dalmandi now stands transformed into its developed form. Names like Jaddan Bai, Koyla Bai, and Gauri are still invoked by the elderly residents here. However, the rise in prostitution and drunken disturbances in the 1970s led to the emptying of these courtesan brothels. The name of Ranjit Singh, the then Inspector of Chowk Police Station, will always be associated with this, as he played a significant role in the transformation of Dalmandi.
